FAQ

Why can't I download images or videos?

This is an App Store requirement from Apple. Apps on the App Store are not allowed to download media from third parties, except if they possess an official license allowing them to do so. Instagram does not give out these licenses, so Apple required me to remove all download functionality from PhotoDesk.

However, you can still
- Sync your own images in a folder on your file system (you made these yourself, obviously you have all the rights to those images, you can download them)
- Collect images into albums within PhotoDesk. Within those albums, you can collect images much like in a folder on your Desktop.

How can I edit images

PhotoDesk is an Instagram Client for the Mac PhotoDesk lets you not only browse your or your friends Instagram pictures, but easily explore the social graph and find new people to follow. The Instagram Network doesn’t allow other apps to upload images. It’s only allowed via the official Instagram iPhone app. PhotoDesk can’t edit images since it can’t upload them to Instagram (see see #here)

How can I get Mountain Lion Notification Center Notifications?

In the preferences, under the ‘Advanced’ tab, you can activate the ‘Display Notifications’ setting.

How can I manage which comment I already replied to

When you reply to a comment from within PhotoDesk, it will automatically remember that you already replied to it. Afterwards, you can click the popup box that sits above the comment list, and select ‘Replied Comments’ or ‘Unreplied Comments’. You can also star comments to remember that you want to reply to it later.

How can I show PhotoDesk in the toolbar?

If you go into the preferences, there’s a checkbox under ‘General’, that says ‘Display Icon in Menubar’. That should do the trick.

How can I upload images

The Instagram Network doesn’t allow other apps to upload images. It’s only allowed via the official Instagram iPhone app. Instead, with PhotoDesk you can browse beautiful pictures, newest uploads of your friends, or interesting people to follow. Furthermore, you can comment on pictures, like them, download them, or watch them in slideshows. In the PhotoDesk description it says: “*Uploading images is forbidden by Instagram which allows only uploads from mobile devices.* ”.

I am getting a maximum likes / follows / unfollows message

Instagram continously changes their maximum value parameters for different actions and also adds new ones. It is difficult for me to keep track with these numbers since they seem to change a lot. In any case, the restriction does not come form PhotoDesk. The restrictions are being processed through Instagram and there is (sadly) nothing that I here at PhotoDesk can do about it.

I am getting a maximum requests of 350 message

Instagram enforces a limit of max 350 likes per hour. If you liked more than 350 items in one hour, you exceeded the limit and have to wait for one hour until you can start liking items again. Please note that Instagram constantly changes these numbers, so it may be that the limit is at 300 in a month from now. The FAQ will be updated accordingly but may contain outdated information for some time.

I can't download the images from some users

PhotoDesk respects your followers call for privacy. If you follow someone who is set to private (i.e. you had to apply to follow him/her), then you won’t be able to download or share his/her images.

I can't login, what are my username and password?

PhotoDesk requires an existing Instagram account. You'll need an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch to create such an account in the Instagram app.

Sadly, this can't be done from within PhotoDesk due to restrictions from Instagram.

I don't want PhotoDesk to log me in automatically when it starts

In the preferences, under the ‘Advanced’ tab, you can deactivate the ‘Automatically log in to your IG account’ setting.

I just bought the app, but news section is empty

PhotoDesk can't display as many news as the Instagram iPhone app, due to Instagram api limitations (see #here.)

This means that if you just purchased the app, it can't show you any news since it doesn't have access to old / previous news.

I think something is not working correctly

Just go over to the Contact Form and write me a mail.

I want to download all the images for a tag

Due to the huge amount of images, that certain tags contain, you can only download a subset of at most 3000 images. To do that, open the tag in question, and click ‘View -> Load More’ in the PhotoDesk menu. Reply the question with ‘Ok’, and then you have to wait until PhotoDesk downloaded all images. Once it is done, you have to click ‘File -> Download these images…’ in the PhotoDesk menu. That’s it.

I want to like images with a double click, like on Instagram!

If you go into the preferences, there’s a checkbox under ‘Advanced’, that says ‘Single click opens, Double Click likes’. However, if you activate it, you won’t be able to make image selections anymore, as items are selected with one click, but one click already opens the image.

I want to use PhotoDesk for a party/event/wedding. Can it slideshow and automatically update a tag like 'johnswedding2012'?

Yes, when you slideshow over a view like tag view in PhotoDesk, you can set the slideshow to auto update. Then, it will reload any new images for that view / tag and display them in the slideshow automatically.

News doesn't show me my friends activities / news

Instagram doesn’t offer an official way for clients (except for their own iPhone App, of course) to access news. So the PhotoDesk news support is limited and not as broad as the iPhone app. PhotoDesk shows you only news for comments and likes on your images and if your account gains a new follower. It doesn’t show you when somebody writes your name in a comment on a different image (from someone else) for example. Also, the news system only works for images with less than 200 likes or comments due to another Instagram limitation where anything over 200 is not being returned.

PhotoDesk is suddenly empty!

That will delete all the authentication data that PhotoDesk had saved up and when you restart it will request new authentication data from Instagram.

  • If that doesn’t help, try this:
  • 1. Go into PhotoDesk Preferences,
  • 2. Click on the ‘Advanced’ tab
  • 3. Uncheck ‘Automatically log in to your IG account’
  • 4. Quit PhotoDesk again
  • 5. Go to https://instagram.com/accounts/manage_access
  • 6. Search for the “PhotoDesk” entry
  • 7. Click ‘REVOKE ACCESS’
  • 8. Restart PhotoDesk and relogin and grant rights again

That will allow PhotoDesk to completely re-authenticate against Instagram.

The like icon when hovering is too small

In the preferences, under the ‘Advanced’ tab, you can activate the ‘Big Like Button’

Can I add tags or notes to images in albums?

We understand that many of our customers utilize PhotoDesk’s great search and collect abilities to explore the Instagram networks for brand-related images that can be re-posted (with authors permission). Oftentimes, these users would love to add some notes to the favorited images, i.e. when to post this image, which marketing campaign to relate this to, and much more.

Photodesk allows to store notes with favorite albums in a limited manner: When you create a folder hierachy in the sidebar, you can tell Photodesk to store all these folder names as individual tags for each image in the folder. For more information, have a look at this video.

How can I get Mountain Lion Notification Center Notifications?

Instagram is currently working hard on removing spam (comments / likes) from the network. If people from within a third party app like too many items too fast, they’ll be flagged as a potential spam account. This flag is temporary and will go away after some time. You may have run into this situation if you liked or commented on a lot of items too fast.

How can I like or comment on multipage images at once

PhotoDesk used to contain special functionality which allowed you to like or comment on up to 50 images or videos at a time. However, in accordance with new restrictions by Instagram, those have been “deprecated”. You can still activate them in the preferences under advanced, but keep in mind that using them may get your account flagged due to “spammy behaviour”.

Can I add tags to images?

Yes, PhotoDesk allows you to add comments to images. Any tags contained within a comment are added to the images list of tags, as long as the image belongs to you. However, due to recent limitations by Instagram, a comment can only contain max three tags. PhotoDesk even contains a feature that lets you set the tags on an image based on your own favorite tags.

How can I hide the dock Icon?

PhotoDesk allows you to hide the PhotoDesk dock icon through a setting in the PhotoDesk preferences. Please note that the icon will only be hidden if you’re not using the app. When you’re within PhotoDesk, the icon has to be visible.
